On the 6th November 2018 we completed our mission of bringing ‘home’ 100 years on to those who did not return ‘home’ after the end of WW1.
We went in to the former USSR side of Berlin to visit and pay our respects over the grave of Herbert Snell, born, raised and schooled in our village.
We felt it fitting to symbolically leave Herbert until last, as Herbert was our last man to fall, tragically dying 5 weeks after the Armistice as a prisoner of War in the heart of his enemy.
We stood over his immaculately tended CWGC grave, said a prayer, recounted his life story, held a silence and laid a wreath of west Norfolk lavender bound by a Snettisham Torc along with letters from the village and a schoolchild.
Whilst here we met with and thanked local German CWGC gardeners who were so proud of their work in keeping Herbert’s grave and those of the 1000+ commonwealth servicemen alongside him so nice in perpetuity and their role in helping others of all nations to come along reflect, honour and remember. A fitting, hopeful and uplifting ending to our endeavours….
